About Sonja Krenek:
Growing up in Eureka, California, Sonja Krenek was very involved in music, even at a young age. She studied several instruments, including piano, flute, oboe, and the alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones. Ms. Krenek also performed in many classical and jazz bands, and orchestras, including the All-State Honor Band and Orchestra and those at Eureka Senior High School.

Ms. Krenek attended the University of California, Irvine, where she earned her Bachelor of Music Degree in 2008. During her time there she performed such roles as Musetta in a performance of the third act of La Bohème, La Ciesca in Gianni Schicchi and Monica in The Medium. She also performed as Christine in an excerpted version of The Phantom of the Opera for the Orange County Philharmonic Society.

After graduating, Sonja moved to San Francisco to pursue her Master of Music Degree at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. In 2009, during her first year of study, she won second place in the Vocal Concerto Competition. She then went on to win the competition in 2010 and was cast as Anne Trulove in the school’s 2010 production of The Rake’s Progress.

Sonja has spent several summers participating in performance programs. In 2005 she was involved with the Opera festival di Roma where she sang La Prima Conversa in Suor Angelica as well as in the chorus for Le Nozze di Figaro. Ms. Krenek also attended SongFest in 2006 and 2009, where she had the opportunity to be involved in scene performances, singing such characters as Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte and Pamina in Die Zauberflöte. She has performed in many Master Classes with such great artists as Stephanie Blythe, Luana De Vol, Martin Katz, Margo Garrett, Elizabeth Futral, Amy Burton, Mark Morash, Frans Boerlager, Victoria Litherland and Angela Brown. Sonja has also been a finalist in competitions such as Tomorrow’s Stars and the Holt Memorial Scholarship.

Red Union Hair Salon’s 2nd Annual San Francisco Severed Head Contest Winners

Votes are in and tallied. This year San Francisco Institute of Esthetics and Cosmetology swept the contest both in participation and in winners.

Thank you everyone for participating. Fun was had by all. This contest always gets everyone in the Halloween spirit.

2nd place was Robyn Gabo with “Phantom of the Opera”. Again, San Francisco Institute Of Esthetics and Cosmetology. Robyn got her wish of wanting to win this year. Twice.

San Francisco Halloween 2009 – 2nd Annual Severed Head Contest

We are turning heads.  Severed heads that is.  The salon is  located on the second floor on Union  Street and Buchanan in San Francisco.  Mannnequin/Severed heads peaking out at you as you are walking by.  

26 amazingly talented stylists was the count for last years heads.  Each head  a piece of art itself. What an amazing show.  With cash prizes and awards 4 beauty schools  participating.  

This  year  we would like  to also extend  the  invitation to some of the the best Hair salons  in San  Francisco to compete as well.  Who will win?  Who has  the passion?  Robyn Parish, Placement leader of San Francisco Institute of  Esthetics and Cosmetology said” We want to WIN this time!”  

I was honored  to get a call from Zenzie herself excited to participate  again this year.

First Prize was swept away by two thirds of the votes. “Marie Antoinette” who was actually be-headed in real life. A very fitting candidate for a severed head contest. She was done by Loren Laughlin from Miss Marty’s School of Beauty. Loren received a 200.00 Dollar cash prize.

Second Prize was taken by Kate Dewald who entered “Beauty School Drop-out”. We all know and remember “Grease”. This girl is an amazing talent and will not go back to High School! Kate received a 100.00 dollar cash prize.

Third Prize went to Tim Hutton who did Abandon a very majestic biblical figure. Tim, a very talented stylists who knows his worth was the only one to price his exhibition like a true artist.

Halloween Severed Head Contest Winners

Marie Antoinette Severed HeadRed Union Salon had its “First Annual Halloween Severed Head Contest.” Can I just say what an amazing contest it was! The participation, creativity
and enthusiasm where parallel to none. Four of San Francisco’s best Beauty
Schools battling it out for supremacy. A bit like “Project Runway” . We
call it “Project Headway”. Meaning on heads only showcasing “Amazing Hair
and Make-up”. There where a total of 26 heads and an installation of “Wizard
of Oz” that was off the hook.

First Prize was swept away by two thirds of the votes. “Marie Antoinette”
who was actually be-headed in real life. A very fitting candidate for a
severed head contest. She was done by Loren Laughlin from Miss Marty’s
School of Beauty. Loren received a 200.00 Dollar cash prize.

Some other serious contenders where “Medusa” done by Pasha Smith came in 4th by only 2 votes with Zenzie’s School of Beauty who swept up 2nd, 3rd and 4th. “Siamese Twins” by Emmazing with San Francisco Institute of Aesthetics and Cosmetology. “A Tribute to Madonna” for all you Madonna/Fetish fans.

Fun was had by all and certainly got everyone into the Halloween Spirit. Perhaps we’ll extent the contest to all “Hair Salons” in the Bay Area next year!

San Francisco: Halloween Contest and Art Show!

San Francisco – Halloween 2008
Red Union Salon invited some of San Francisco’s best beauty schools to create “Amazing Hair and Make-up” on one of their Mannequin/Severed Heads. We could call this contest “Project Headway”. Sort of like “Project Runway”, except a bit more “ghoulish” and on heads only. We are turning Red Union Salon into “Halloween/Hair Heaven” the Show starting October 15th 10AM.

Voting will close on October 30th 8:00 PM. Winners will be announced on Halloween!
